Launch Praise Heaps

Dr. Ezra Suruma has described Prof. George W. Kanyeihamba as a courageous man who has fought for the country’s freedom.
Suruma delivered these plaudits while speaking at the launch of the retired Supreme Court judge’s new book, ‘The Blessings And Joy of Being Who You Are’, at Protea Hotel in Kampala.
“Prof. Kanyeihamba has the courage to stand for the freedom of our country. It is not easy. It is hard but thank God we have a few people who are ready to suffer for us to be free,” Suruma said.
Just like Kanyeihamba, a former attorney general, among other high profile appointments, Suruma has served the NRM government in various capacities, including as minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. A highly regarded economist and banker, Suruma’s reputation was tainted by the Temangalo saga in which the current Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi, and his business partner, Amos Nzei, sold their land to NSSF in controversial circumstances.
Suruma was subsequently relieved of his duties as minister and reassigned as advisor to the President on issues of finance and economic planning where he has kept a low profile. In the new book, Kanyeihamba’s 13th, he writes candidly about his background and life in the Museveni government, including intrigue and how he managed to overcome it.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, who was chief guest, described the book as a must-read. Kadaga, who remembered that the first Kanyeihamba book she read as a wide-eyed law student at Makerere University was a text book titled, Constitutional Law in Uganda, acknowledged the retired judge’s contribution to the nation and his zeal for human rights and constitutionalism.
“No matter where you go, the presence of Prof. Kanyeihamba will always have an impact. You are a role model not only to young people but to the legal profession,” Kadaga said.
Citing the phrase, Publish or Perish, that is often associated with professors, General Elly Tumwine said Kanyeihamba’s prolific writing was a fulfillment of this requirement.
